New Date Capture and Reporting Service Network has been Created for Clinical Trials in Japan

According to this article in Outsourcing-Pharma.com PHT, which is a US ePro specialist, has teamed up with CRO CMIC to create a data capture and reporting service network for clinical trials in Japan.

The service will include PHT's patient reporting technologies to biopharmaceutical clients running trials in Japan, and CRO CMIC will provide clinical trials services to both industry drug sponsors and clinical trials sites. They will also supply development, trial-scale production and marketing services through its network to neighboring countries like Korea, China, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Patient recruitment costs continue to increase in clinical trials

According to Earth Times, the patient recruitment step in clinical trials accounts for 23% of the clinical trial time line. They also contribute to the increasing costs of performing clinical trials.

Emerging means for screening potential patients, such as genetic tests, mean that companies must plan for higher lab-testing costs and a lower rate of prospective patient enrollment. And the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) in February published an article claiming that drug development costs had increased at a rate 7.4% higher than inflation.

Acurian expands patient model

Acurian, a patient recruitment solutions provider, has announced a change in their business model. This company is already widely known for their performance contracts based on the customers’ ability to leverage the Acurian database. Now their model will include advertising based strategies focusing on determining how sponsors buy patient recruitment advertising. They’ve already begun this model, and there are two large, centralized performance based contracts according to this post at Market Watch.

Finding patients is the lengthy part of a clinical trial

According to a new report from Cutting Edge Information, detailed here at FDA Drug Daily Bulletin, it takes more time to recruit and enroll a patient for a clinical trial than it does to provide them medical care. There are a few things causing these problems, including competition for the same group of patients who are candidates for popular trials. The study cited the best way to find patients was through physician referrals, patient referrals, and newspaper and television ad.

Acurian, a patient recruitment service, has invested in data modeling in order to improve patient recruitment. This has increased the data modeling capabilities. According to this article at Clinical Trials Today, these tools will take analytical data expertise and technologies to help them recruit based on data they’ve collected. In addition, it will help them to develop and analyze patient recruitment campaigns.

CIO and Vice Presidnet of Operations, Roger Smith, had this to say about their new tools:

“So while we’ve made significant investments in analytical data expertise and technologies to help us run the only performance-based recruitment business in the industry, our customers are the true beneficiaries. Our data experts and tools help sponsors better understand the enrollment continuum from response to randomization so that there are no surprises in timelines or budget allocations.”

Phase II Patient Recruitment for TPI ASM8 Completed

TOPIGEN Pharmaceuticals, has announced that patient recruitment and enrollment for the Phase II safety and efficacy study for TPI ASM8 drug has been successfully completed. It is an inhaled, anti-inflammatory drug for treatment of moderate to severe asthmas. Chief Development Officer for TOPIGEN, Mark Parry-Billings, had this to say about completion at this stage:

"The completion of patient recruitment in this Phase II trial is on schedule, and represents a significant clinical achievement for TOPIGEN. We look forward to completing the study and reporting on data at the end of this year.”

Billings also had this to add:

“There is a significant clinical need for improved medications to treat this patient group, particularly those patients who do not respond adequately to conventional medication. TPI ASM8 has the potential to provide an effective and well-tolerated approach to improve asthma control in these patients, and has the added advantage over other pipeline products of being delivered simply by inhalation."

SMI Inc. Establishes Patient Recruitment Division

SMI Inc., a medical marketing company connecting over 400,000 doctors, has announced they are opening a patient recruitment division. They are doing this to accelerate the recruitment and enrollment process for clinical trials, as reported by the Philadelphia Business Journal.

With this new division, the company will:

help clinical research organizations find individuals to participate in clinical trials, and implement point-of-care marketing programs to encourage patients to enroll in appropriate clinical trials.
